Vatican declares 19th century Marine City priest ‘venerable’

Bishop Frederic Baraga, the “snowshoe priest,” famous for ministering to Native Americans and settlers in Michigan and Wisconsin from the 1830s to 1860s and writing the first Ojibway/English dictionary, has been declared “venerable” by the Vatican.
